So you want to personalize the subject line of your Mailchimp email campaigns? Here is the quick and simple way of including your subscribers first name in the subject line of your email marketing campaign.
- In Mailchimp, start creating your campaign.
- In the Setup section of the Campaign Builder look for the Email Subject field.
- In the Email Subject field, enter *|FNAME|* where you want the first name to appear.
That’s all there is to it. Your recipients will now have a personalized subject line.

This doesn’t work
Hi Awo, please test that you’re adding the merge tag per the instructions above.
Doesnt work for me as well. Im including *|FNAME|* in the subject….
Carlos, do you definitely have the first name for all your subscribers (or have you added a default merge tag value for the first name field)? See how to set the default merge tag value.
The form appears to wrap the entry in quotes which breaks the tag…
@Bee What do you mean by ‘form’ and ‘entry’ in relation to this article? Thanks
If you’re copying and pasting *|FNAME|* perhaps try to type it out rather than pasting.
What is the way to write an option of a fallback if there is no FNAME populated in the database
