I recently compared the ongoing cost of using Shopify versus WordPress WooCommerce for a small online store. Just after I’d published that post I received a request to help a business integrate their custom developed eCommerce platform with the MailChimp API. That got me thinking how important it is that the majority of businesses choose commonly used eCommerce software or service for their online shop.
Consider your marketing when selecting your eCommerce software
I’m a MailChimp expert and assist many organisations to increase their sales through email marketing. I also am a Google Partner and setup and manage clients shopping advertising on Google. MailChimp e-commerce integrations (for automated product marketing) and setting up effective Google Shopping Ads both require integrations from your eCommerce store to both , or either, of MailChimp and Google. Both of these integrations are extremely popular for online sellers.

What many online sellers don’t know is that these emails may be automated once we connect our eCommerce store and MailChimp. With WooCommerce and Shopify the integration (connection between the two systems) is provided free of charge by MailChimp. To have this integration developed can cost many thousands of dollars (considering that ongoing updates will be needed to be paid for if you’re not using the MailChimp provided integrations) so by using a commonly used eCommerce platform we immediately save significant amounts of money on our email marketing.
Integrating Shopify & WooCommerce with Google Merchant is free
When you search Google to buy a product you’ll have noticed the shopping ads near the top of the search results. The products in your online store can appear here too.
A prerequisite to have your shop items shown in Google Shopping Ads is that your products must be uploaded to Google Merchant Center. There are certain specifications for the data that must be supplied to Google for each of your products. In addition there needs to be a means of keeping Google updated with your products; the simplest way is to have Google fetch a file of your products from your eCommerce software. Again, like with the MailChimp integration, the popular eCommerce software and services have available the free creation and update of the files in the format that Google require the data to be supplied. For many of the less well used eCommerce software a means of creating the data feed will need to be developed (or alternately you will need to update Google manually every day).
